Requirement
The amazing ability to network globally, collaborate and the availability of third party applications and tools on smart phones has enabled a never before access to knowledge resources for users across age groups – from kindergarten children to adult learners.
Learning for toddlers must be fun and easy. Learning Blocks (Lego Blocks) has always been an easy and fun way to learn. The combination of classic game blocks with educational content & technology to create an innovative learning method is the finding of the modern Preschool Education system.

Technical
Blocks with its various combinations promote creativity in the child and are inseparable from the nursery. With blocks, children can comprehend their world, practice their motor skills. Legos also help in understanding and learning about colors, shapes and combinations can be learned very easily.
The new concept of Learning Bricks combines lesson content with high quality connectable bricks to achieve a novel educational toy system. Kids can use the bricks to build letters, words, numbers, music notes, even equations and learn to comprehend even complex correlations while playing. This method is ideal for beginners’ education.
The concept behind the alphabet application is to build upon the basics of learning method and blend it with the new mobile technology to create an application that enhances learning. WITS designed an application that builds upon the sophisticated computational technology of the iPhone/iPod.
Our partner Terzio Möller, a leading publisher of children’s educational content is leveraging upon the capability of these new smart phones (in this case the iPhone/iPod) to distribute immersive and engaging mobile learning edutainment solutions for its users. These new phones are being increasingly used by a younger and smarter population and it is this new user group that is being catered to by solutions that replace the traditional means of learning for children – writing books, colouring books and more.
The application:
- Encourages playful learning
- Fosters perception, creativity and first studies
- Furthers concentration and fine motor skills
- Developed with experienced pedagogical experts

Completion
The mobile solution that has been designed and developed is an application that will teach users in the age group of 3-8 years to learn alphabets. The application allows the users to learn the alphabets in 3 ways:
- Build -Solving puzzles (legos) – two levels of complexity
- Writing alphabets - two levels of complexity
- Painting alphabets
The application allows the user to login to their iPhone/ iPod device and choose any of the above 3 ways to learn the alphabets. The user can also save, e-mail and reset the application. This allows the user to share their work with their peer group, parents, etc.
This application builds upon the traditional tools available to children to learn the alphabet without compromising on the learning.
The Build application is completely open for the user for all the alphabets A-Z.
On three connecting bricks there is a print of a picture, an initial sound and the corresponding word. If the bricks are assembled correctly, the word is completed.
Write and paint have only 2 alphabets open for the user. However, the user can purchase from the app store the remaining alphabets and use them.
A nifty feature of the iPhone is the shake feature and we have used this to design a solution that allows the user to shuffle alphabets. This makes the user experience more immersive.
To keep the app engaging and to ensure continual learning we plan to have regular updates to the paint section, by adding new galleries like Christmas, Animals, Sports etc,
The application also allows for reinforcement of learning by allowing the user to practice the alphabets again and again just like they would if they were using physical legos, pens, crayons and paper, etc.

Client and User Feedback
"The application is a fun filled learning experience for users. It engages the users and at the same time allows them to learn. The application also uses the sophisticated technology available to generate a curiosity and interest in the users.
The functionality of save allows the user to revisit their earlier attempts at building, writing and painting and hence reinforce their knowledge of the alphabet.
The application has evoked a keen interest in young users. It also manages to hold their attention for a long time as they learn. The functionality such as shake/shuffle (to change the alphabet) allows them to play and learn and hence holds their interest for longer than in the traditional methods. The user is able to change the alphabet by shaking the iPhone/ipod. In Build application the user needs to use his logic and mind to complete the alphabet. In Write the young user practices to write the alphabet, where he can practice his writing to perfection. In paint the young user plays with colours and shows his creativity while learning the character.
The application allows the publisher to distribute a fun, engaging learning solution for the target group. Also the increasingly sophisticated mobile technology available to the users can be put to effective use to build a solution that engages learners in a fun-filled fulfilling learning experience.
Also since the solution will be available for global distribution on the Apple store, the application can be easily accessible to users across geography.
The application also puts a powerful tool in the hands of parents to help their children learn in a game like environment. The user actually plays around with the application while learning at the same time. Also this enables the users to learn “On the Go”. The user need not carry the traditional bulky tools of colour pencils, books, etc to learn. Instead they can use the iPhone/ iPod device to play and learn anytime, anywhere".
